End-to-end
academic writing

Learn workflows
and use toolchains
for better writing

Konspekt

is a

sustainable writing

project

We help academics, researchers and writers to streamline and optimize writing procedures.

For this, we are building:

  • a video course on how to set up a workflow that speeds up and deepens writing
  • an end-to-end toolchain, or app, to scaffold your writing process from reading literature to managing and compiling your papers.

We also plan to hold meetups and to have a regular newsletter about latest digital tools, tips and best practices in writing.

Video course

Video course

A comprehensive yet concise video course that will guide you to build your own writing workflow. It covers:

  • Zettelkasten method for note making
  • setting up a system from scratch

See you!

Toolchain

Toolchain

A command-line tool that helps along the whole writing process. With it, you can:

  1. Set up a Konspekt system
  2. Create and organize your paper files
  3. Compile papers into PDF, DOC and more

What is wrong

with

current

writing methods

Research writing is not straightforward. It can be daunting and complex to grasp, especially when you start a new paper.

Usually, it consists of these stages:

process-diagram

There are several problems with this approach: on the level of content and on the level of workflow.

Content

  • writer's block — blank page
  • unstructured bits and pieces when developing a paper — hard to assemble into draft
  • too monolithic process: read a lot, process all of it, draft and format
  • hard to work on several papers in parallel due to monolithic process

Format

  • coupled writing and formatting — distractive
  • vendor lock-in — if major word processors go away, you won't be able to open your papers
  • slow when has many images
  • making bibliographies manually is tedious, especially if you need to change the citation style on the go

It seems that academic writing is mostly taught as a linear process. However, it gets far easier if approached as a non-linear one. It needs a simple system of procedures to process information. It is easy to learn, set up and maintain.

How to improve it

  • Adopt a sustainable format — markdown (.md)
  • Break down the monolithic process into independent modular chunks
  • Automate bibliography insertion and citation management
  • Automate typesetting and formatting

Konspekt teaches setting up such a system on your own and provides a toolchain to help you streamline your writing.
